‘I am not through it’: Paramore’s Hayley Williams reveals she’s ‘still dealing’ with depression and PTSD as she bares all in her raw solo album

Paramore’s music has been a solace for millions of young adults struggling with mental health issues for more than a decade.

And now the band’s frontwoman Hayley Williams has opened up about her own struggles with depression and PTSD in her raw solo album Petals for Armor.

Despite being able to ‘articulate’ her complex emotions through music, the 31-year-old singer-songwriter says she’s still dealing with a lot of challenges today.

‘I am careful to explain to fans it is a long process and I am not through it,’ Hayley told the Daily Telegraph about her ongoing recovery.

‘It’s a beautiful place in my story to be able to articulate these feelings and put it out there, but I am still dealing with quite a bit. Right now in quarantine, it’s on a minute by minute basis,’ she added.

The Misery Business singer felt the 2017 studio album After Laughter was the first time she delved into her own mental health.

The Paramore album acted as a ‘primer’ for Hayley’s solo debut Petals for Armor, which she says helped her learn more about herself through the creation process.

‘It was the best way to learn how to open up about my mental health, it made me feel a lot less alone because I was met with such grace and empathy from people willing to share their experiences,’ she explained.

But Hayley hadn’t been aware she had depression until she was diagnosed after until she finished touring that album.

‘I found a facility where I could go and be in a safe group or by myself and talk. That’s where I was diagnosed with depression and PTSD,’ she told Vulture.

In Petals for Armor, Hayley also delves into loss, grief and childhood trauma, as well as the public breakdown of her marriage to New Found Glory’s Chad Gilbert.

Hayley and Chad got together in 2008, while the guitarist was still married to his first wife. They were married in February 2016, but had separated by July the next year.

Hayley has since revealed she felt pressured to get married to solidify the relationship, after feeling ‘guilty’ for being the ‘other woman’.
