Singer SZA Shares Her Cystic Acne Cure

SZA may be a Grammy-nominated superstar whose songs dominate all of our Spotify playlists, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have the same skincare issues as the rest of us non-famous people.

In a new interview with Refinery29 backstage at NYFW, the “Love Galore” singer opened up about how she deals with some of her most frustrating skin issues. And considering she was a skincare consultant at Sephora before she hit it big as a platinum-selling artist, it’s safe to assume she knows a thing or two (… or a dozen) about taking care of her face.

For SZA, the cardinal rules of skincare are “consistency and simplification.” She doesn’t believe in testing out a zillion different things, but rather finding what works for her and sticking with it. “I don’t have that gene pool,” she says of vloggers who can try out a zillion different products on their YouTube channels and somehow not end up with weekly breakouts. “Every now and again, if I see something really cool, I’ll be like, ‘Let me try this little turmeric mask.'”

However, the 27-year-old shared that touring messes with her skin on a “whole other level” which yes, sometimes results in cystic acne flare-ups. To treat the pesky zits, she sticks with all-natural products (200-person meet and greets + sweating on stage = the skincare kiss of death, apparently). Her heroes? “I use a Manuka honey mask to combat it and hemp oil to smooth out the surface of my skin,” she says. “I also use a Vitamin C serum and black soap, and that’s it. If I go to the dermatologist and get a peel, she prescribes me sh*t after, but I don’t use it,” explaining that she often breaks out if she does.

Most importantly, SZA spilled the most important beauty advice she’s learned both from taking care of her own skin and teaching people to care for their own. “Don’t get discouraged with your skin when it doesn’t do what you want it to do … Give it some time,” she says. “That’s the only way to get to know yourself.”
